Caribbean Casinos Lure Net Gamblers Offshore
Australians’ most popular place to gamble online is a Caribbean
casino, according to a survey.
While online gaming websites are illegal, except on certain sports
betting and lottery sites, about 40 per cent of hits by Australians
gambling on the internet are on illegal overseas casinos and sports
The average gambling visit lasts only about 11 minutes, but some
sites regularly have punters playing for more than two hours.
According to an online research company, Hitwise, nine of the 10
sites keeping gamblers online longest are based overseas.
The federal Interactive Gambling Act 2001 makes it illegal to provide
or advertise interactive gambling sites, with fines of up to $220,000 a
day for individuals and $1.1 million a day for corporations. But it is
difficult to police because many sites are based overseas, and it does
not apply to individuals using the sites.
The Australian Broadcasting Authority, which has been responsible for
handling complaints about illegal online gambling since late 2001, has
only identified 11 illegal websites it says should be filtered out by
internet service providers.
