Illegal Gambling Expected for Cricket Finals
AUSTRALIA As reported by the Sydney Morning Herald: "The
International Cricket Council’s Anti-Corruption and Security Unit is
bracing for a substantial increase in illegal betting activity –
involving hundreds of millions of dollars – for each game of Australia’s
best-of-three finals series against India, which begins today at the
MCG.
"According to Jeff Rees, the ACSU’s general manager and chief
investigator, illegal bets in Mumbai alone could approach the estimated
$500 million (US$384.77 million) wagered on last year’s World Cup final.
"With cricket-related gambling increasing across the globe – and
one-day finals series attracting more interest from black-market punters
– Rees warned that the threat of would-be corrupters attempting to
contrive results remained serious.
