Online Bets by Children
The British Government yesterday warned online casino
gambling firms that they were "in the last chance saloon" after they
refused to stamp out under-age betting.
Tessa Jowell, the Culture Secretary, issued the warning
after the Association of British Bookmakers claimed that online gambling
by children was not a significant problem.
Miss Jowell said that if bookmakers failed to comply
with her demands to install new technology to identify children gambling
on the internet, they would face unlimited fines and could lose their
gambling licences.
"It is completely unacceptable that gambling companies
are prepared to play with the well-being of children," Miss Jowell said.
"Those who avoid their responsibilities and leave children exposed to
risk had better understand they are in the last chance saloon."
She wrote to firms in July to demand action after a
study by the charity Gamcare found evidence of under-age gambling in
online casinos.
