Poker Popularity Hot Hand for Deadwood Casinos
Deadwood casinos began cashing in last year
after the HBO hit series "Deadwood" went on the air, and the newfound
popularity of poker is spurring even more interest in local gambling.
That has prompted casinos to open more card tables, according Larry
Eliason, director of the state Gaming Commission, who notes a 70 percent
increase in traditional poker tables over the past year and a 40 percent
increase in poker revenues in casinos.
"The popularity of poker has been there for
several months," Eliason said. "It’s not an overnight thing."
He said he walked through a handful of casinos on a Wednesday night in
the dead of winter and found few people playing slot machines but a
flurry of activity at poker tables.
