Poker Games are all Around You
The last few years have brought about an amazing — and some say
dangerous — trend of playing poker, especially among the younger,
It’s hard to say exactly how many are playing poker, but it’s not a
stretch to say more than ever before. A study by the University of
Pennsylvania’s Annenberg Public Policy Center found an 84 percent
increase from 2003 to 2004 in card playing among males ages 14-22 who
attend high school or post-secondary schools.
The game of choice is Texas Hold’em. In Texas Hold’em poker, each
player is dealt two cards, called hole cards. Five more cards, called
community cards, are dealt face up. The object is to make the best
five-card hand from those seven cards.
Television networks, spurred by ratings that make executives giddy,
are devoting more and more programming to poker. Web sites that allow
players to play poker against others over the Internet, be it for real
money or for fun, have sprouted left and right. In Atlantic City, poker
rooms are expanding, casinos that once had poker are bringing it back,
and those that never had it are starting it up.
