Joining in the Poker Craze
The poker craze that has swept the nation for some time now has shown
me–and millions of others–just how exciting it can be to go "all in."
And as that brand of excitement is marketed more and more toward
demographics outside the stereotypical 35 to 50-year-old group of
married men who spend each Thursday night smoking cigars in the
basement, our newfound love of card playing will offer some serious
thrills–and some disturbing implications.
Though estimates on how many people are currently playing poker vary
widely, it is generally accepted that about 80 million Americans are
playing the game with some regularity.
Fueled by television’s high-stakes programs "Celebrity Poker
Showdown," "World Poker Tour" and the "World Series of Poker," the game
is the fastest-growing recreational activity among 17-24 year old males.
The Thursday night basement game among 45-year-old buddies still
exists, but the biggest bracket among competitors right now is
college-aged players.
The country is saturated with it. You can go to casinos, card rooms,
online casinos based off-shore, gaming rooms set up in people’s houses,
every kind of social group under the sun is staging their own poker
tournament. It’s nuts.
