Ontario Man Wins $40,000 in Televised Poker Game
A Canadian investment banker who stumbled into a poker game on the
Internet won $40,000 US ($52,700 Cdn) in the event’s final on Friday
in a high-stakes game broadcast live on British television.
After finishing fourth, Nicholas Barbu said he had no regrets, even
though he lost out on the top prize of $300,000 US.
"I’m not disappointed or anything, I think it’s a lot of fun, a
great event," said Barbu, 47, of Waterloo, Ont., who is a regular
player in Las Vegas.
Barbu entered the game on the Internet when he was at loose ends on
a Sunday afternoon earlier this year, not knowing that he could end up
playing in London for such big money in the Ladbrokes Poker Million
2004.
The contest started out with about 300 online players, but it
wasn’t until later when just 30 players were left that Barbu realized
what was riding on the game.
