Gambling Treatment Program Helping Few in Early Stages
In the 44-county area of Middle Tennessee, 350 people have passed
screenings for gambling addictions, but only 12 have received treatment
at Buffalo Valley Inc. in Hohenwald, the state-contracted treatment
center in Middle Tennessee.
The University of Memphis Gambling Clinic is the state’s contracted
treatment center for West Tennessee and the Helen Ross McNabb Center in
Knoxville is the East Tennessee treatment center. Calls seeking
information on the number of patients they have treated were not
immediately returned Monday.
According to Dr. James Whelan with the University of Memphis Gambling
Clinic, 1.5 percent of the state’s adult population meet the criteria of
gambling addiction.
And 5 percent of the state’s adult population experience significant
problems due to their gambling, but are not diagnosable for addiction,
Whelan said.
The program is available to anyone addicted to any form of gambling –
from the state lottery to casinos to Internet games. The program
provides free screenings at the three locations and counseling on a
reduced fee.
