Dice Start to Roll For UK’s Las Vegas
FOR more than five years Blackpool, the seaside resort best known for
its donkey rides, kiss-me-quick hats and fading Winter Gardens
conference centre, has been touted as becoming Britains answer to Las
Vegas.
But this weekend the dream is finally moving closer to being realised.
A lot has happened since August 2000, when Trevor Hemmings, the
leisure tycoon who owns Pontins and has big stakes in Preston North End
and Charlton football clubs, unveiled his plan to open a string of
casinos in Blackpool, kicking off with an Egyptian-themed one called
Pharoahs Palace.
Government legislation this year paved the way for Britain to get
Vegas-style regional casinos, although initially only one will be
allowed so that ministers can assess its impact. Local councils across
the land are now competing to win the sole licence.
Blackpool, which was first to promote the idea of resort casinos,
last week formally declared its interest.
