Plymouth Voters Recall Mayor, Two Council Members
Plymouth voters ousted their mayor and two City Council members
Tuesday in a recall election, which stemmed from a deal the three made
with an Indian tribe that wants to build a gambling casino on the edge
of the city.
Unofficial results show that Mayor Darlene Scanlon, and City Council
members Gary Colburn, and Rich Martin will be replaced by Pat Shackleton,
Elida Malick and Mike O’Meara, according to Plymouth City clerk.
Absentee ballots have not yet been counted.
The Amador County Board of Supervisors must approve the election
ballot.
"I’m sorry we were all recalled." Scanlon said Wednesday. "I wish
them the best in their endeavors. They’ve got a lot on their plate to
deal with besides the casino."
The Ione Band of Miwok Indians proposed to build a
120,000-square-foot casino complex, with 2,000 slot machines, a
restaurant, convention facility and tribal center.
The complex would be on 208 acres next to state Highway 49, which
winds through the Sierra foothills.
If the city would support the proposal and help the tribe secure
necessary approvals from the state and federal governments, tribal
leaders said, the tribe would share a large amount of the casino profits
— as much as $80 million over 20 years.
