EdgeTV Readying to Roll in Early 2005
For millions of game enthusiastsnationwide, a new television network will soon
let them "watch the best, play with the best and live like the best."
EdgeTV, to be launched First Quarter,2005, will be the first 24-hour network
dedicated to gaming, a one-stop TV destination for all game players — from casino
games to fantasy sports, bridge to crosswords. With $10 million in seed capital,
the venture is led by legal and telecommunications pioneer Reagan Silber and succ-
essful Silicon Valley entrepreneurs and executives Keith Richman and Charles Katz.
Creative Artists Agency (CAA), the world’s leading talent and literary
agency, will assist EdgeTV in new business activities and content acquisition
strategies. With CAA’s help, EdgeTV has built an impressive team of cable
veterans. Former ABC Family president of distribution John B. Burns III
serves as vice chairman, helping to guide the channel’s development and
programming. HotHouse Media, the company led by Tully Bragg, former AT&T
Broadband vice president of programming strategy, and Doug Orr, previously
senior vice president of affiliate sales for Turner Networks, is responsible
for creating distribution agreements with cable and satellite operators.
EdgeTV, headquartered in Beverly Hills, is in final discussions with a
major Las Vegas-based casino group to establish permanent production and
broadcast operations within a major casino.
Describing its program mix as 70% original and 30% acquired, it has
already entered into exclusive broadcast agreements with the U.S. Chess
Federation and American Crossword Puzzle Tournament, led by National Public
Radio puzzle master Will Shortz, among others. Moving toward an early 2005
launch, EdgeTV will also provide ambitious Video On Demand (VOD) and
interactive services to augment its 24-hour programming, teaching audiences
the basics and nuances of a variety of games.
"We acknowledge that there is competition in the marketplace, but believe
that this concept is clearly differentiated by its programming spectrum,
strong capitalization and emerging partnerships with the creative and gaming
communities," stated Silber. "EdgeTV will be a comprehensive source for the
games that people play. We anticipate that it will not only be strongly
embraced, but demanded by viewers."
"These are the games America knows and loves, the games they care about,
and we have them in spades," Richman added. "EdgeTV is the only channel to be
on-air, online and interactive, providing viewers multiple platforms through
which to play and learn. Given that all forms of gaming have hit a new
popularity among the mainstream, the time is ripe for EdgeTV."
