State Official’s Gambling Records Seized
State law enforcement officials served subpoenas at Town Hall
yesterday as part of an investigation into the campaign finances of
state Assemblyman Anthony Impreveduto, officials said.
Impreveduto, who is serving his ninth term, represents the 32nd
Legislative District, which includes Secaucus, Kearny, Harrison and East
Newark. He is also chairman of the business department at Secaucus High
School.
On May 14, state investigators went to Impreveduto’s Secaucus home
and office and seized computers. At that time, an official familiar with
the probe said investigators were interested in how Impreveduto paid for
a trip he took abroad with his wife to a gambling industry convention.
State lawmakers occasionally attend out-of-state conferences related
to their legislative duties. In 2000, Impreveduto introduced legislation
to allow licensed casino operators in New Jersey to operate online
casinos.
State election law says legislators may use political funds for
campaign costs and "the ordinary and necessary expenses of holding
public office." The law specifically prohibits the "personal use" of
campaign funds.
Impreveduto’s campaign disclosure reports filed with the state
Election Law Enforcement Commission list thousands of dollars of
payments for American Express bills, but the expenditures are not
itemized. One official familiar with the investigation said agents were
seeking an accounting of those expenses.
